Changing the Background of a Picture with Movavi Photo Editor

If we had a nickel for every time people complained about a picture’s background, we would probably be multi-billionaires by now.

Even the most powerful camera can only do so much to the background before running out of options. There are solutions, such as deploying elaborate and expensive green screens or using expensive and difficult software to post-process the picture. Not all of us are tech-savvy enough to use all the assortment of expensive software with steep learning curves.

Couldn’t There Be an Easier Solution That Actually Works?

After scouring the Internet, we found Movavi Photo Editor to be a solution that actually works. While this powerful tool lets you change and alter your pictures in a number of ways, we will be focusing on how to change the background of a picture using it.

Step 1) Installing Movavi Photo Editor

You will first have to download the photo editor. Follow this link for the Windows installer or click here if you plan to use the software on Mac OS. Follow the simple onscreen instructions to install the software.

Step 2) Uploading the Photo to the Program

Upon launching the program, you will come across a host of options. In order to select your image, click on the “Browse for Images” button and navigate to the directory which contains the image. Alternatively, you can simply drag and drop the picture onto the intuitive GUI.

Step 3) Replacing the Background

To change the background, click on the “Change Background” button. This will reveal a green brush and a red one. The green brush lets you outline the main subject that you want to retain in the picture. The red brush lets you highlight the background you want to delete. A yellow outline will automatically appear to show you parts of the picture that will be separated.

At this point, you can tinker around with the yellow line to ensure that the subject is as accurately represented by the green brush as possible. Remember: precision is important for better results.

Once you are satisfied with your selection, choose the “Set New Background Button”. The default background is now transparent, but you can overlay any background image on to it.

Step 4) Adding New Image

To add a new background, click “Add Image” and choose from the default pictures. You can also pick a picture from your collage for more customized results. You have successfully changed the background.

Step 5) Final Touches

At this point, you should adjust the blur and shift options for your preferred results. You can also change the size and precise location of the image to fit in with the background. Use the cropping tool if needed. Once you are happy with the results, click on “Apply”. You will be shown a side-by-side comparison between your old picture and newer ones.

Step 6) Saving the Picture

At this point, it’s just a matter of saving the picture. You can choose from several formats or stick with the default one.
